One of the most common questions we get at StickerForge is: "Should I order my labels on a roll or on sheets?"
The answer depends entirely on how you plan to apply them. Choosing the wrong format can slow down your production line or waste money. Here is the definitive guide to making the right choice.
Roll labels are spun around a cardboard core (usually 3-inch or 1-inch). This is the industry standard for manufacturers found in our Industries Section.
Machine Application: If you use a labeling machine (automatic or semi-auto), you MUST use rolls. Machines cannot feed sheets.
Speed (Hand Application): Even if you apply by hand, peeling from a roll is 3x faster than peeling from a sheet. It's cleaner and generates less waste.
Material Variety: Rolls offer more material options, including Clear, Metallic, and Textured Estate Papers.
If you are ordering rolls for a machine, you need to tell us two things, or the labels won't fit your machine:
Core Size: The diameter of the cardboard tube inside.
Standard: 3 inches (76mm).
Small Desktop Printers: 1 inch (25mm).
Unwind Direction (The #1 Mistake): Which way does the label come off the roll?
Is the Top of the logo coming off first? Or the Left side?
This is called the "Unwind Chart" (e.g., Position #1, #2, #3, #4). Check your machine's manual before ordering!
Sheet stickers come flat, usually on a letter-sized or A4 backing paper.
Storage: They stack flat in a drawer or file folder.
Small Quantities: Ideal if you only need 50 stickers for a wedding favor or a test run.
Handouts/Swag: If you want to give a sticker to a customer as a gift (e.g., inside the shipping box), Die-Cut Singles or Sheets are better than cutting one off a roll.
Regardless of Rolls or Sheets, every design needs a Bleed Area.
Machines cut extremely fast, and they can shift by 0.5mm.
The Rule: Extend your background color 1.5mm (0.06") past the cut line. This ensures you don't get a thin ugly white line on the edge of your sticker if the cut is slightly off-center.
